Once the yolk-sac is depleted, the alevin become fry. Some species of salmon fry migrate directly to the ocean. Others live in freshwater for up to two years before migrating. These young freshwater salmon are called smolts.

The salmon remain in salt water for their entire adult life. While at sea they feed on herring, squid and other small marine life. Their life span in the ocean varies, with some species remaining at sea for up to four years.
