Direct Problems
Effect on insects:
-killed harmless insects
Effects on small animals:
-killed birds, fish and frogs
-stored permanently
-accumulated over time

Unfortunately, DDT killed many organisms besides pests. Harmless insects, such as honeybees and butterflies, disappeared from treated areas. Small animals like birds, frogs, and fish were also affected by DDT. When scientists examined the affected animals' bodies, they found high levels of DDT. They concluded that once DDT entered the body of an organism, it was stored there permanently. Small amounts of the poison could accumulate into lethal amounts over time. Next
