One person in 20 carries a copy of the cystic fibrosis gene. These people are called carriers. If two carriers have a child together, there is a 25 per cent chance their child will have the disease. There is also a 50 per cent chance that their child will be a carrier. Scientists have designed tests to identify carriers of the CF gene.
