Between 1896 and 1899, thousands of adventurers travelled to the Yukon to take part in the Klondike Gold Rush. They endured a long and difficult journey to join in North America’s most famous gold rush.
Klondikers began their journey when they boarded one of many steamships that left Vancouver, Seattle, and San Francisco. The ships, bound for ports in Alaska, were always dangerously overloaded with people, food, and supplies. This meant passengers had to eat standing up and sleep three to a bed for the entire five-day trip.
