Mining for gold was hard work. Prospectors dug deep holes near streambeds. They looked for "pay dirt" which was earth containing a rich supply of gold. Prospectors collected pay dirt during the winter and spring. In the summer, they used water to separate gold dust and small gold nuggets from the dirt.
