The first wheat in Canada was planted by Louis La Corne in Saskatchewan in 1754. Many farmers tried to grow wheat during the next 150 years, but early frosts and cold weather often killed the fragile grain. It was not until 1909 that Charles Saunders developed Marquis wheat, a hearty plant that ripened in 100 days and could survive cooler temperatures. By 1920, most of Canada’s wheat farmers grew Marquis wheat. Today, Canada is the world’s second largest exporter of wheat after the United States
