The migration cycle begins in Canada during late fall. Flocks of Canada geese gather in large fields, called staging areas, to increase their food reserves before migrating south. The geese often fly up and land again repeatedly, in preparation for their long migration. Then, large groups fly up and split into V-shaped formations. The birds take turns in the lead position as they fly south to the United States. This ensures that no single bird is battered by head winds during the entire flight.
