When it is time to spawn, thousands of salmon gather at the estuary where the ocean meets their home river. Scientists are not sure how they know when it is time to return upstream. The salmon often travel hundreds of kilometres upriver to their original spawning grounds. They do not eat once they leave the ocean and must rely on their body reserves. Next
