The life cycle of the Pacific salmon is one of nature’s wonders. Salmon are born in freshwater but spend their adult life in the ocean. They must then return to their birth stream to reproduce. The life cycle of the salmon has five distinct stages.
The Pacific salmon life cycle begins in freshwater streams or rivers. Salmon eggs usually hatch in spring or early summer. The young salmon, which are called alevin, emerge with a yolk-sac attached. This provides their food until they can feed for themselves.
