Salmon experience physical changes while spawning. They no longer eat and must rely on their body reserves. Most species turn red and the males develop hooked snouts. Males and females form pairs once they reach the spawning grounds. Females lay several nests of eggs for the males to fertilize. Each nest is then covered with protective gravel.
