There were up to 60 million bison in Canada at the beginning of the 1800s. Then guns were introduced by the Europeans and bison hunting became much easier. The settlers and Metis killed bison mainly for their hides. They often left the meat behind. By 1885, there were only about 500 bison left in Canada.
