A nuclear fuel bundle is depleted after 18 months. Used nuclear fuel is highly radioactive and is toxic to all life forms. The spent fuel is sealed and placed in a pool at the power plant. After five years, it is moved to an outdoor cement container for storage. Spent fuel can harm life forms for thousands of years.
